Proyecto Pewen: Five-Year Forest Restoration Success in Patagonia Araucaria Forests¶
The Proyecto Pewen, initiated in 2021, has successfully restored araucaria (pewen) forests in Patagonia that were devastated by fires in 2013–2014. Through collaboration between scientists, Mapuche communities, and civil organizations, the project has combined scientific research with ancestral knowledge to restore fire-damaged ecosystems across the region.
- Planted nearly 55,000 araucarias and native species over five years
- Actively restored 56 hectares of forest in Neuquén province
- Established community nursery network with capacity to produce 20,000 plants annually
- Integrated scientific research (20+ years in Lanín National Park) with Mapuche traditional ecological knowledge and community participation
- Original 2013–2014 fires destroyed over 3,400 hectares of araucaria forest
