6 SUNY ESF Joins NSF-Funded FIRE-NET Network for Regional Wildfire Resilience in Northern New York¶
The SUNY College of Environmental Science and Forestry (ESF) announced its participation in FIRE-NET: Adirondack Fire Futures, an NSF-supported network addressing wildfire resilience across northern New York. The project, led by Professor Andrew Vander Yacht's Applied Forest and Fire Ecology Lab, integrates 15+ years of research on fire as a driver of forest ecosystem resilience into regional fire preparedness and forest management planning.
- NSF Award #2536051 funds FIRE-NET: Adirondack Fire Futures network
- SUNY ESF's Applied Forest and Fire Ecology Lab (AFFEL) leads fire ecology research with 15+ years of disturbance ecology studies
- Research portfolio includes fire effects on greenhouse gas emissions, forest hydrology, tick abundance, and fire-dependent biodiversity restoration
- Network integrates ecological insights into Adirondack and North Country fire preparedness planning
