5 SUNY ESF Leads NSF-Funded Fire Ecology Research Network in Northern New York¶
The SUNY College of Environmental Science and Forestry (ESF) announced participation in FIRE-NET: Adirondack Fire Futures, an NSF-supported regional network addressing wildfire resilience. Led by Professor Andrew Vander Yacht's Applied Forest and Fire Ecology Lab (AFFEL), the initiative integrates 15+ years of disturbance ecology research into forest management and prescribed fire applications across northern New York.
- NSF Award #2536051 funds FIRE-NET collaboration across northern New York
- AFFEL has conducted 15+ years of research on fire as a driver of forest ecosystem resilience
- Research portfolio includes studies on fire effects on greenhouse gas emissions, forest hydrology, tick abundance, and restoration of fire-dependent biodiversity
- Project integrates fire behavior analysis, controlled burn implementation, and ecological monitoring into regional wildfire preparedness planning
