7.5 NASA selects team to investigate potential lunar subsurface cave

NASA selected a Planetary Science Institute-led team to investigate whether a large subsurface cavity extends beyond an identified lunar pit opening, potentially suitable for future astronaut habitation. Lunar caves would provide natural protection from cosmic radiation, micrometeorites, and dust storms on long-duration missions.

• Investigating potential subsurface cave beyond lunar pit opening
• Aims to assess suitability for future astronaut habitation
• NASA identified 16 promising lunar formations from 15 years of satellite data
• Formations show persistent shadows despite strong solar illumination, suggesting underground cavities
• Sites include Mare Tranquillitatis (Apollo 11 site) and Mare Ingenii
